Every account number is unique

In the Czech Republic, all account numbers use the Modulo 11 format. What does this mean? Put simply, every account number is unique and cannot have just any value. It must meet the condition of divisibility by 11, which means its mathematical form must be divisible by 11. Czech birth numbers (rodná čísla) have worked on a similar principle since 1953.

For this reason, the system very often detects an error in an account number caused by a typo or another mistake, because it is very unlikely that a wrong number would happen to meet the Modulo 11 format. The most common error is therefore in the bank code, which the banking system cannot use in this way to verify the account number.

I sent money to the wrong account number. How can I find out who owns it?

If you have “managed” to send money to the wrong account, you may think it would be easy to find out the account holder’s name and ask them to return it. Unfortunately, this is not really possible.

The Personal Data Protection Act sets out which details can be given to a third party, and the account holder’s name is not one of them. Banking secrecy rules therefore prohibit all bank employees from disclosing the names of account holders. Likewise, banks cannot cancel payments or take money from anyone’s account just because you ask them to.

Sometimes a name may be matched to the account number after you send the money. If you have sent money to an account that does not exist, the money will still be debited from your bank account. You may start to panic, but the money will be returned to your account if the recipient account does not exist.

Your money may also come back to your account if you send it to an account belonging to a larger service provider that requires the correct variable symbol. The service (for example electricity advance payments, internet, or investment platforms) uses the variable symbol to match payments. If your variable symbol is missing or wrong (and does not belong to another user), the money will be returned to your account within about two days.

But do not lose heart. There are two ways to get your money back.

So what can I do?

If you made a mistake when entering the account number and your money went to another account by accident, you have two options:

  1. Contact the account holder
  2. Resolve the matter with your bank

How can you contact the account holder when you have no idea who you sent the money to? If they do not return the money on their own, you can send, for example, 1 CZK (about 0.046 USD) to the same account number and write in the message for the recipient that a mistake was made and ask whether they would kindly send the money back. If this does not work within a few days, I recommend taking the official route.

Contact your bank and tell them what happened. The bank will then ask the account holder to return the money to your account. The bank cannot force them to return it, so everything depends on the person’s willingness. If you still do not get your money back, you will have to sue the account holder for unjust enrichment. This step usually works very well.

If money has been stolen from your account, the bank has completely different powers, so it is very important that you clearly explain what happened. If your credit card details are stolen, act without delay and firmly (several times if necessary) ask the bank to put things right.
