Can a free legal advice centre help?

Is free legal advice online and by phone a solution?

Life brings a huge number of different situations. In some cases, it is not enough to rely only on your common sense and the internet, and you need to seek professional legal help. However, not everyone can afford to pay a lawyer’s fee. For these cases, free legal advice services exist.

Bezplatná právní poradna (Free Legal Advice) is a portal that is online, free, and always available and open to your questions on various areas of law. The portal pravni-rady.eu works in a similar way. The Bezplatná právní poradna portal has introduced a small fee for answering a question, which is currently 30 CZK (about 1.4 USD) per question and 79 CZK (about 3.6 USD) for a priority question.

The pravni-rady.eu portal is said to still be completely free. The services work by you posting your question on the website, and a lawyer who works with the advisory service then answers it. I also recommend going through previous questions and answers, you may find that someone dealt with a similar matter before you. Even if you find an answer to your question there, do not hesitate to ask again. In the meantime, the law and the situation may have changed. This way, you get double confirmation of your answer.

Try turning to a free legal advice service

The Czech Bar Association (Česká advokátní komora, ČAK) is probably the largest body offering free legal help, including to socially disadvantaged groups of the population. Obtaining this legal help naturally has certain conditions, which you can find on the ČAK website.

Of course, the ČAK is not the only body in the Czech Republic that can give you free legal advice. If you are affected by enforcement proceedings, you can turn to the Czech Chamber of Executors (Exekuční komora ČR). More detailed information can be found directly on the Chamber’s website.

You can also find help from the Association of Civic Advice Bureaus (Asociace občanských poraden), which brings together several organisations providing free legal counselling. This counselling focuses mainly on single parents, unemployed people, people living at the edge of the subsistence minimum, and national minorities.

You can also get help from law students at Palacký University in Olomouc, who provide free legal help under the supervision of their teachers and lawyers.

The capital city of Prague offers similar help, having launched a project similar to the one in Olomouc, where, in cooperation with Charles University, senior students offer free legal help.

Free legal help is also provided by various associations and even municipalities. If you need help, also try turning to your local municipal office, or try looking at your municipality’s website.

At the same time, it is also true that only a lawyer can provide legal advice. We therefore do not recommend joining online discussions, where anyone can answer. It is definitely better to turn to one of the services described above in this article, so you can be sure that an experienced professional is really the one answering.

Even though only lawyers provide free legal help, it can happen that it will not resolve your problem comprehensively.

Unfortunately, a lawyer working pro bono for you will not have as much time as a lawyer you pay for a full hour. This is a risk of these free advisory services. It is also possible that the lawyer will answer exactly what you ask, but will not know that several other problems are linked to that question.

This is because the lawyer will not work with you over the long term, and so will not know your specific situation and all the circumstances involved.

On the other hand, free legal help is definitely important. The fact that someone lacks the means to obtain legal help should not be an obstacle to resolving a life situation. In case you need legal help but do not have the money for a lawyer, turn to a legal advice service.
