Rare 10-crown coin, what it looks like and how much it can be worth

Do you have a lot of small coins in your wallet? You might find a treasure in the form of a special, rare ten-crown coin. You might not notice it at first glance, but examining the small details could reveal that you’ve found a valuable ten-crown coin. And that could be worth up to several hundred thousand crowns!

How can you identify a rare ten-crown coin?

This ten-crown coin is special primarily because only 1,000 were minted. However, nobody knows how many are in circulation. It’s the first appearance of the new ten-crown coin, which was minted between 1992 and 1993. After a few pieces were minted, the details were subsequently reworked into the current typical appearance. Identifying features of the rare ten-crown coin are the year 1993, smaller “Kč” letters on the reverse, and a higher transverse line that intersects the number 10. Later, the minting was reworked directly at the request of the minting author. The first version, however, most often entered circulation via coin-operated machines.

Interestingly, ten-crown coins are replaced and worn out more quickly than other coins because copper is more susceptible to oxidation and wear. As the years pass, the chance of finding this small treasure among coins becomes increasingly small.

How much is a rare ten-crown coin worth?

Previously, this type of ten-crown coin was auctioned for approximately 35,000 crowns, which is already considerably more than its nominal value. In 2020, however, one such coin in very good condition was auctioned for 176,000 crowns. And a year later, the price even exceeded 230,000 crowns.

If you find such a coin, its condition is mainly what matters, which will affect the final price you can get. If you think you’ve found this particular ten-crown coin, visit a numismatist in your area who can determine if it’s really a rare piece. Searching for such a ten-crown coin can be an opportunity to get rich.

What other Czech coins might be valuable?

The rare ten-crown coin is not the only Czech coin that may have a value greater than it appears at first glance. For example, metal fifty-crown coins issued in smaller quantities or in a collector’s set are interesting. The most interesting is the fifty-crown coin from 2005. What is most important for coins?

  • number of surviving pieces,
  • age of the coins,
  • preservation and condition,
  • connection to a historical event or significant day of the state.

Among the rare coins are also the twenty-crown coins that the Czech National Bank issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the republic. There are three variants, each issued in an emission of 200,000 pieces. The coins depict portraits of T. G. Masaryk, M. R. Štefánik, and Edvard Beneš. To obtain such a coin, it was necessary to visit some of the Czech National Bank’s workplaces and exchange coins.

Special gold coins

Higher prices will certainly not be surprising for special collector’s coins that are minted from pure gold. The Czech National Bank also offered beautiful coins with a linden leaf design. Sales were held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia and the emission was 11,000 pieces, of which 8,200 coins were in the best so-called proof quality. The advantage of pure gold coins is not only their collector’s value, but also the rising price underpinned by the precious metal.

What should you do if you discover a rare Czech coin in your wallet?

When you look through your wallet or purse, you might be lucky enough to find one of the rarer Czech coins. In this case, you can contact a numismatist to verify the coin’s value and potentially receive an offer to buy it. Once you have verification and, potentially, an assessment of the coin’s condition, you can also start selling it yourself. Besides offering at fixed prices, it is worth trying selling through an auction in this case. If there is significant interest, you could receive a multiple of the amount you originally anticipated.
